Your Weather Pictures

We get a lot of great weather pictures sent to our Calendar news programme. Now we are encouraging you to also send them to the Flickr group ITV Yorkshire Weather Photos so we can see them all together and share them with this blog. You never know, I might even get the weather presenters to comment on them. Mark

Just a note that we're compiling a great list of Christmas entertainment.

Fabulous Film Opportunity

We are all looking forward to the broadcast journalism film competition which we are running for 13 to 19 year olds. The deadline for entries has been extended to the 9th of December so if you have an idea for the film look at the instructions.

I had a great time learning some of the ground rules of mentoring from the Mediabox team who are providing the funding for five winning ideas. The five film makers will be given a day's workshop on the 15th of December and assigned a mentor.

Can I encourage you to enter this (or encourage youngsters that you know), because this is a valuable opportunity for kids who don't normally get a chance to gain media experience. The whole process will be fun and hugely rewarding. And thanks to Colin at Bradford's National Media Museum who'll be hosting the workshops.

We lurve music!

We've just launched our music channel which focuses on some of the best unsigned talent in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

As part of the new channel we invited in a famous Leeds face. If you'v eever walked around Leeds city centre on a weekend the chances are you will have come across The Bedroom Orchestra - a busker who loves to entertain.

We brought him in from the cold to have a chat about life in Leeds and becoming a signed artist, plus he played on of his favourite tracks - check out this sneak preview:

Steve McClaren's Stars

What do the stars hold for Steve McClaren? Steve may not have seen it coming but Russell Grant is way ahead of the game.

You'll need to "Get away from it all' was Russell's prediction.

The flood that never was

We were on high flood alert last Friday. The talk was of a storm so bad it would rival the east coast floods of 1953 when parts of Lincolnshire were demolished and many people lost their lives.

It wasn't as bad as that, thankfully. The flood defences managed to hold.

We rummaged through the YTV archives to find material from those floods of '53 and it was amazing to hear the tales from those that were there and see the devastation caused.

For a special look back at the floods of 1953 click here: East Coast Floods 1953

Sam's dramatic rescue

Here's some very dramatic footage from the Hull and Humber Clipper which you may have seen on ITV Calendar.

17-year-old Sam from Hull was taken ill on board and was rescued by a Brazilian naval vessel.

The footage was first to appear on ITV Local Yorkshire and then our colleagues at Calendar used it throughout the day. Watch below:

Sailing around the world

We've been quite fortunate to get some great video from on board the Hull and Humber Clipper which is racing around the world.

Watch this space for more videos to come like the one below. It really gives a great idea of just what it's like on-board

ITV Local Yorkshire meets Google Video

As a test we added a great interview of Monty Panesar to Google Video. The process was quick and (generally) easy.

It can be viewed here:

Over the Moon

Alan Bean was the fourth man to walk on the moon. His was the second lunar landing, and although it was 35 years ago, he is no less excited for having been there. Alan has been in Pontefract talking to students about one of the greatest adventures to have been made. Jon Mitchell describes it as an honour (and is clearly excited) to interview Alan Bean.

Jason Donovan

I am reliably told that Jason, heartthrob, Donovan will be appearing on tonight's Calendar programme. I wouldn't normally take much notice myself but the girls in the newsroom seem a little distracted today.

Wednesday 10 October 2007

Grassroots Sport

We launch a Grass Roots Sport channel later today. Here's a man you might remember from the days of the TV show, How.

World Mental Health Day at Huddersfield Uni

Tomorrow, 10th October

The event, from 10am to 3pm, takes place in the Harold Wilson Building foyer, the Castle Hill Suite and the Quayside Centre and involves a variety of informative and active sessions around mental health and mental illness as well as stalls and stands describing the experience of mental ill health and the services and support available.

The Chief

Wayne Allison will go down in English football history as one of the few players who've appeared in 750 league matches. He reached the landmark last week and is now just seven appearances short of Frank Worthington's all-time record for a striker.

The Chesterfield player talked with David Hirst before their game against Macclesfield. See the report on Calendar tonight with the full interview on ITV Local.

Goodbye Mr Clough

A month or so back we showed a fascinating interview with Brian Clough and Don Revie, filmed in the aftermath of Clough's controversial dismissal at LUAFC back in 1974.

We do, of course, monitor the number of people using ITV Local and this feature attracted a huge audience. Since taking it off we have received a large number of requests to put the feature back.

I'm pleased to say a have obliged and you can once again see this historic and remarkable feature at http://www.itvlocal.com/yorkshire/sport/

Fly-by shooting

The West Yorkshire police have come up with a cracking idea - taking photos other than crime scenes while they are out and about. Their charity calendar has some great shots of Yorkshire taken from the air. The one above is a rare scene of three of the counties power stations; do you know which ones they are? Details of how to buy a calendar are now on the ITV Local Yorkshire website.

Childhood Remembered

A new series for the weekends begins soon, Childhood Remembered. To open, some enchanting footage from Grimsby capturing the spirit of childhood. It shows youngsters in the sixties not playing with fashionable electronic devices, but making their own entertainment.

What may seem ordinary or everyday, with the passage of time can provide a powerful insight into the way our lives have changed. But are these changes for the better? Were children then as happy as they are now, or quite the reverse?

Watch out for more details on ITV Local this week and catch the series soon. And if you have any video or cine footage taken 20 years or so ago then email us at yorkshire@itvlocal.com

Andy Ritchie interview

Huddersfield Town shared the points with Notts Forest in a one-all draw. It's been a frustrating time with injuries for Danny Cadamarteri since he arrived at the Galpharm and he couldn't help in sharing with the fans his joy at scoring his second goal in two games. Unfortuantely for Cadamarteri, who'd already been booked, referee Nigel Miller was in no mood to celebrate with him - and sent him off.

You can see the whole interview with Huddersfield Town Manager Andy Ritchie about that controversial sending off

Voice Box

ITV Local is constantly responding to your ideas for new features. We've been contacted by a number of you who are keen to put some fire under local campaigns - for example, World Mental Health Day, Anti Bullying and giving a voice to Refugees.

ITV Local requires you to make a video in order to have a place on the channel, and we appreciate that making videos requires a certain amount of confidence (not to mention equipment). If your message is highly personal and relevant then we'll forgive the production quality.

If you really find producing a video a problem, we are establishing a new project which we are calling the "Voice Box".
We'll have more on that soon, but in the meantime write to yorkshire@itvlocal.com with your ideas and we'll give you more information.

A sporting feast!

One of the most appealing features of ITV Local is the fact that we can show complete interviews and press conferences.

Sports fans have flocked to the ITV Local Yorkshire site in previous weeks to watch a fascinating 15 minute press conference with Leeds United boss Dennis Wise, interviews with Hull manager Phil Brown and a pre-fight interview with Sheffield boxer Clinton Woods before he takes on Julio Cesar Gonzalez.

Today we've added an extended interview with Leeds United assistant manager Gus Poyet who is an engaging character - see it for yourself, in full, here.

A big hello from us

Welcome to the first post in our new blog. We had our official launch last week in Emmerdale's Woolpack - very definitly an inside job. We hope that through this blog you will get a rare insight into the inner workings of ITV Local.

The service includes a mix of news, sport and entertainment together with what is usually described as user generated content. “UGC is not a term we like at ITV Local because it sounds a bit like YouTube”, says Mark Waddington the Channel Manager, “this is more than a platform for viewers to show their video clips and films, it’s a chance for them to enter into a new kind of relationship with ITV specifically.”

ITV Local Yorkshire’s ‘partnership with the public’ has been a focus for the work of Channel Assistant Judith Knight, who has spent the last two months building working relationships with local film makers and community groups. “There are so many amazing stories out there that the public rarely gets a chance to see, everyone I have spoken to is really keen to be involved.”

Rabinder Bhachu is the Broadband News Editor for ITV Local Yorkshire and his focus in this busy period has been to work with the Calendar News team to establish how the regular TV output and the broadband service can work together for mutual benefit. “Calendar is less than thirty minutes and so the stories have to be short and snappy and now alongside this we can offer extended versions of the stories for the viewers who want more on a subject."

The last big event for the team is the launch party last week for community organisations and groups where they found out how they can use ITV local to support their activities. “Television is no longer something you just watch”, says Mark Waddington, “but something you can get involved with through ITV Local Yorkshire."
